Stoneman was born on a family farm in Busti, New York, the first child of ten. His parents were George Stoneman Sr., a lumberman and justice of the peace, and Catherine Rebecca Cheney Aldrich. John Forster (1814-1882), immigrated from his native England to Mexico in 1831 and two years later settled in California. In 1837 Forster converted to Catholicism and married Isidora Ygnacia Pico, sister of Pio Pico (1801-1894), the last Mexican governor.
